FSCRA Race #5 Recap – Fun’s Back!
Race #5 is in the books, and I’m happy to report—fun has officially returned.
After the chaos of the last race, it took a lot of late nights and elbow grease to get the ol’ girl back to baseline. Big thanks to some generous friends who stepped in—by the time we hit the track, I felt a whole lot better than I did earlier in the week.
We showed up with a game plan and a couple of rookie crew members: my daughter Ava and her boyfriend Nick. They both got crash courses—literally—in tire data logging and Racecar Spotting 101, and they crushed it!
The car felt solid in open practice, which was a much-needed confidence boost. Made a few small tweaks for Practice #2—better. Tweaked again for qualifying—better still. Ended up P4 behind some tough competition: Jeff Jones back in the mix with the 17, Tommy Laxson in the always-consistent 24, and California’s Eddie Second in the lightning-fast 72. All things considered, I was pretty happy with it.
Heat Race: Started inside Row 3, managed to work my way to the front by Lap 3 and held off the charge for the win. The 72, 24, and 17 weren’t far behind, but it felt good to get that W.
Main Event – 30 Laps: Another small setup adjustment. Lined up outside of Row 3. Didn’t get the best jump at the start but tucked in behind the 24 and settled in. The four of us (72, 24, 17, and me) put on a little train ride through the first batch of lapped traffic.
Car felt strong and laps were flying by—until the 17 had to tap out with engine trouble. We caught more traffic, and the 72 slipped through clean. I tried to make a bold move—outside of the 24, inside of the 11, while the 24 was trying to lap the 00. Made a little contact, but we all got through and kept rolling. Spent the last 10 laps staring at the 24’s back bumper, looking for another opening that just never came. Ended up P3.
All in all—a solid night, and a fun one.
Big shoutout to Mike for making the trip up to spot for me after a long day at the farm. And thanks to Joe, Scott, and Chuck for always making time—weekday, weekend, or race day—to help me go faster.
